Our Mission

Family Caregiver Hope Association (FCHA) Mission Statement

At the Family Caregiver Hope Association (FCHA), we understand the unique challenges of being a caregiver for an ill or elderly loved one. Our mission is to provide a comprehensive suite of services that support education, foster community, and empower caregivers to not only survive but thrive through the ups and downs of caregiving and life after caregiving. We follow the H.O.P.E. framework, guiding caregivers through every aspect of their journey.

H is for Healthcare

Navigating the healthcare system can be daunting, but we are here to help you optimize every doctor visit, avoid unnecessary hospitalizations, and choose the appropriate site of care. Our resources cover everything from understanding the aging process and managing common illnesses to preventing and treating complications like pressure ulcers. We provide guidance on collaborating with professional in-home care providers and escalating care needs, including assisted living, nursing homes, hospice, and end-of-life care. Our goal is to ensure you and your loved one receive the best possible medical care while minimizing setbacks from illnesses and injuries.

O is for Overcoming Overwhelm

The paperwork, finances, family relationships, and logistics of caregiving can be overwhelming. We offer education, frameworks, guides, and resources to help you navigate these challenges. Our easy-to-follow step-by-step guides are designed to move you from feeling overwhelmed to feeling empowered. We break down complex tasks into manageable steps, providing you with the tools and confidence you need to handle the administrative and emotional aspects of caregiving.

P is for Personal Goals

Taking excellent care of yourself is essential for being the best caregiver you can be. Self-care isn't selfishā€”it's necessary! You can't pour into others from an empty bucket. We support you in managing your own mental, physical, and financial health throughout the caregiving process and beyond. Our resources help you with time management, establishing healthy boundaries, and dealing with common feelings associated with caregiving, such as guilt, frustration, isolation, and fears. We believe in helping you maintain a balance that allows you to thrive both as a caregiver and as an individual.

E is for Emergencies

Even with the best care, illnesses and accidents can happen. We provide you with prevention strategies, home safety guides, and checklists to minimize risks. Additionally, we empower you with first aid and emergency care knowledge so you can respond effectively when emergencies arise. Our goal is to prepare you for any situation, ensuring the safety and well-being of your loved one and providing you with peace of mind.

The Family Caregiver Hope Association was founded by Dr. Jaime Hope, a physician specializing in Emergency Medicine. With nearly two decades of experience working at a busy Level 1 Trauma Academic Center, community-based emergency departments, and rural critical access emergency departments, Dr. Hope has served countless patients and the family members who care for them. She has witnessed firsthand their frustrations, fears, difficulties, struggles, and the beautiful, rewarding challenges of caring for ill and elderly loved ones.

More than once, Dr. Hope has found herself on the other side of the stethoscope.

In 2011, she and her husband were ecstatic, expecting their first child. However, during the pregnancy, she was severely ill with hyperemesis gravidarum, requiring a specialized IV from her arm to her heart for medications, vitamins, and fluids. Confined to modified bed rest, she was unable to perform her duties as a physician.

In 2014, while preparing for their second child, Dr. Hope faced even greater challenges. She was notably sicker, requiring the specialized IV again, as well as a feeding tube for nutrition, and was placed on severe activity restriction. With limited ability to care for herself and her toddler daughter, she was incredibly grateful for her husband, family, friends, medical team, and caregivers, without whom she and her son might not have made it through successfully.

Dr. Hope has served as a caregiver to her patients, as well as multiple loved ones.

In 2015, Dr. Hope's beloved mother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer, and Dr. Hope became her caregiver. She navigated the complexities of radiation, chemotherapy, surgery, and multiple medical appointments, all while continuing her clinical practice and raising their two children with her husband. She experienced firsthand the challenges of in-home and remote caregiving as her mother-in-law traveled between her own home and theirs, depending on her symptoms and medical needs.

Dr. Hopeā€™s son underwent major kidney surgery in 2021, requiring a month-long recuperation. She has witnessed her grandmother caregiving for her uncle, her mother caregiving for her grandmother, and many more examples of loved ones helping loved ones.

Dr. Hope is a passionate educator, keynote speaker, and invited lecturer on a variety of medical and health-related topics. She has been featured in Board Review educational courses, Grand Rounds, podcasts, press conferences, mastermind courses, Good Morning America, NBC Now, and numerous radio and television appearances, in addition to her many live audience sessions.

Having experienced the full spectrum of caregiving rolesā€”as a physician, patient, parent, daughter-in-law, granddaughter, friend, and moreā€”Dr. Hope deeply understands and empathizes with the complexities of being a caregiver. She combined her passion for teaching and compassion for caregivers to create a platform that educates, supports, and empowers members throughout their caregiving journey and beyond.

The Family Caregiver Hope Association was created in collaboration with multidisciplinary specialists, including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, lawyers, and financial advisors, to bring you the best and most actionable content.
